Blackwater Won Contracts Via Dozens Of Dummy Corporations

WASHINGTON – The security company Blackwater Worldwide formed a network of 30 shell companies and subsidiaries to try to get millions of dollars in government business after the company faced strong criticism for reckless conduct in Iraq, The New York Times reported Friday.

The newspaper said that it was unclear how many of the created companies got American contracts but that at least three of them obtained work with the U.S. military and the CIA.

Obama Headlining Richard Blumenthal Fundraiser


HARTFORD, Conn. — President Barack Obama plans to attend a fundraiser later this month to help Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal’s campaign for the U.S. Senate.

The Blumenthal campaign confirmed Friday that the president will appear at a Sept. 16 fundraising event in Stamford. The president also is scheduled to headline an event for the Democratic National Committee that day in Greenwich.

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said Friday she was wrong when she claimed that headless bodies were turning up in the Arizona desert as part of border-related violence.

“That was an error, if I said that,” Brewer said about beheadings occurring in Arizona.

Jan Brewer: UN Human Rights Report ‘Downright Offensive’, Remove Reference To Arizona Immigration Law


PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer demanded Friday that a reference to the state’s controversial immigration law be removed from a State Department report to the United Nations’ human rights commissioner.

The U.S. included its legal challenge to the law on a list of ways the federal government is protecting human rights.

ALBANY, N.Y. — New numbers confirm what the sweaty brows of Northeasterners have been saying for months: The summer of 2010 was a record-breaking scorcher.

Preliminary figures provided by the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University on Friday show 28 cities from Washington, D.C., to Caribou, Maine, set record highs for average temperature from March through August.
