WASHINGTON — Seeking to give anxious Democrats a boost ahead of the November elections, President Barack Obama is pitching a trio of economic initiatives Wednesday and voicing unwavering opposition to Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy, an issue on which he’s looking to draw a stark contrast with Republicans.

The White House said the package of infrastructure investments and business tax incentives Obama was to outline during a speech in Cleveland is meant to put the economy on a path toward long-term growth while also allowing for some immediate job creation.

HAVANA — Fidel Castro criticized Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for what he called his anti-Semitic attitudes and questioned his own actions during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 during interviews with an American journalist he summoned to Havana to discuss fears of global nuclear war.

Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic, blogged on the magazine’s website Tuesday that he was on vacation last month when the head of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington – which Cuba maintains there instead of an embassy – called to say Castro had read his recent article about Israel and Iran and wanted him to come to Cuba.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan — Two suspected U.S. missile strikes hit militant targets in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, officials said, bringing to six the number of such attacks in the region in less than a week. At least 10 suspected members of a group attacking NATO forces in Afghanistan were killed.

The strikes happened within hours of each other in North Waziristan, a lawless region home to militants battling foreign troops just across the border in Afghanistan, al-Qaida leaders plotting attacks in the West and insurgents behind bombings in Pakistan.

John Maronto, the football coach at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, FL, was arrested on Saturday night for soliciting a prostitute.

Police officers went undercover Saturday night as part of a setup to stop prostitution in the beachside area, according to Orlando TV news station CF13.

According to Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood, there is video evidence of the coach talking to an undercover office and offering $50 for sex.
